Monkey and Coke bottle

What would you do with this picture in your classroom?

It was the 3000th picture posted on Twitter to add to the Flickr #eltpics stream.  Find out how to join in with #eltpics and take a look at some of the 30+ sets that we have created together so far. All of the pictures (including the one above, taken by @klizbarker) are shared under a creative commons licence, meaning that they are available for teachers to use in their classrooms without having to worry about breaching copyright.

  1. Great image!
    I’d love to upload it onto fotobabble (or voicethread or the like) and have the students work in pairs or groups to write and record a script for the monkey as if he were taking part in an advert for coke – what would he be saying? how would he be selling it to us? – that kind of thing. Or alternatively he could be telling us how the bottle ended up in his cage – as a monologue or an interview.

  2. Hehe, monkeys are funny…

    Anyway, similar to Ceri, I’d ask the students to make a dialogue. Half the class would work together in pairs to make questions to ask the monkey about why he chose Coke, and the others would think of answers. Then I’d create new pairs with one of each group to discuss the monkeys choice.

    I’m not sure how this would fit into a wider class, but it sounds like fun!

  3. I would use the picture as a springboard to discuss advertising, starting with a question such as
    “The writing on the bottle isn’t in English. how did you know it was a Coke?”
    That could lead to a discussion of logos, use of colors to identify products, etc.
    Then I would ask the pupils if this was an ad or a picture highlighting how people carelessly leave litter /trash… The monkey looks rather unhappy, not eager to get the soft drink!

  4. Imagine this is the cover of a book or movie. What is the book about? What is the title of the movie. How many stars does it get? What’s the genre? Which famous actor is the voice of the monkey…

  6. I think it would be interesting to look at the picture from the monkey’s point of view.
    What can it see?
    What did it think when the bottle was put in front of it?
    What will it tell its friends about its day (I think there’s a friend in the background) :)?
    Does it want to drink the coke?
    What would the monkey feel if it touched the bottle of coke? (ridged top / smooth sides)
    What might drinking coke do to the monkey? (would it go crazy like the squirrel in Over the Hedge)
    And so on…

    It would be great to have them do monkey point of view podcasts and then surprise them

    by running the voice through audacity to change it,

    and putting the picture through crazytalk to make it speak with their voice.

    I’d use that in a future lesson as a basis to guess who said what, and the reasons why, as a “discover your inner monkey” speaking activity.
