This is a set from the Flickr #eltpics stream.  Find out how to join in with #eltpics and take a look at some of the 40+ sets that we have created together so far. All of the pictures (including the ones above) are shared under a creative commons licence, meaning that they are available for teachers to use in their classrooms without having to worry about breaching copyright.

You can make any assumptions you like about the context they are used in. Post your ideas in the comments below. There are no bad ideas!

  1. I think I’d try to launch a meaty discussion.

    I’d invite them to talk about locks— cultures that have them, and cultures that don’t. What are we trying to keep out, or in ?

  2. Opening and closing doors….life is a metaphor of this; chances that have not been seized, or that instead have been picked up!!

  3. This could be good for the new schoo year – what kind of door looks most inviting? which door would you like as your classroom door?

  4. Maybe practicing descriptions by guessing who could be living behind each door.
    Or, if working with children, you could show groups of 4 or 5 pics and hide a kid eating monster and a juicy chest of gold behind two of those doors: they’ll have to decide where the treasure is – avoiding being eaten by the beast – and give reasons why the’ve chosen a particular door – you can provide clues such as the monster’s size or the year the treasure was hidden.

  5. I proposed this set for #eltpics inspired by a German teacher I had when I was living in Paraguay.
    She taught a couple of lessons for us based on a series of five or six pictures of doors.
    First we had to suggest what we thought of when we saw the word ‘door’.
    We then had to look at the pictures and talk about what happened behind them – including the people that lived / worked / passed through.
    In small groups we chose one of the doors and wrote a short story about a day in the life of the people behind the door.
    I really enjoyed the lesson, even though I’ve never been a big fan of doing creative writing in other languages (!).
