Esther Honig is a human interest reporter. As part of a project called ‘Before and After’, she sent the image above to photo editors around the world, along with a simple request: “Make me look beautiful”. The results are a fascinating insight into what ‘beautiful’ really means around the world. You can see all of the images on Honig’s website.

Sixty Second Idea to Improve the World

(Almost) Infinite ELT Ideas has been on a long break, but now it’s back, hopefully for a while!

Forum – a World of Ideas‘, from the BBC World Service, is one of my favourite podcasts because it examines lots of ideas in depth and always makes me think.

Every episode they include a ‘Sixty Second Idea to Improve the World‘, which is available as a separate podcast. In it, one of their three experts has sixty seconds to propose an idea which they think would make the world a better place. The presenter and other two experts then discuss how it would work and whether they agree that it’s a good idea. Each episode is available for 30 days after it’s been broadcast, but you can download them and keep them forever.

One which I particularly liked was broadcast on May 24th 2014, and was the reason I resurrected the blog!

A memorable introduction

The Nigerian born novelist Okey Ndibe suggests we find a new way of introducing ourselves to others through our favourite artworks or objects. So rather than just telling someone your name, adopt a piece of art or even just a tree or a flower, and explain what it reveals about you.

Newspaper adverts

For April, I have planned a month of advert-themed prompts on Infinite ELT Ideas. Here is the first:

I saw these two adverts very soon one after the other before a film at the cinema last week. They advertise two famous newspapers in the UK, The Sun and The Guardian.

While writing this post, I also found a satirical reworking of The Guardian video as if made by The Sun.

John Fairfax, Who Rowed Across Oceans, Dies at 74

It’s an obituary for John Fairfax, the first man to row solo across the Atlantic, and with his girlfriend, one of the first people to row across the Pacific. He was a man who sought adventure because it was there and he could.

What makes Britain British

Recently the British television channel Channel 4 created a programme called ‘Make Bradford British‘. It has had very mixed reviews and prompted a lot of debate about multiculturalism, as well as looking at the controversial Citizenship test which those wanting to settle permanently in the UK or claim British citizenship must pass.

On one page of the accompanying website they published a word cloud of tweets shared under the hashtag #MakesYouBritish. This is a screen capture of the results as I write this (the map is updated every minute):

The Holstee Manifesto was put together in summer 2009 by Mike, Fabian and Dave, the founders of fashion company Holstee, to embody what they wanted from life, and what they believed their designs should incorporate.
